In this work we will expose the current situation of text simplification in NLP. Besides, due to the difficulty that long sentences cause at machine translation, we will analyse a corpus of long sentences in Basque in order to make syntactic simplification proposals. Although those simplification suggestions are limited to some specific sentences (appositions, relative and temporal sentences), this linguistic approach opens a research line for the Basque language in NLP text simplification. key words: text simplification, Basque, linguistic approach, syntactic simplification
